Abstract

The relationship of compressive strength and moisture content of coconut tree is evaluated in this paper. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the compressive strength of coconut trees from several location in North Sulawesi. This research was conducted through laboratory testing, which is based on ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials ). Test results showed that for all parts of the coconut tree, compressive strength parallel to the grain is greater than that of compressive strength perpendicular to the grain. Moreover, the compressive strength of coconut tree tends to decrease along with an increasing in water content, which trends of both compressive strength parallel and perpendicular to grain, decrease when the value of moisture content increase. This phenomenon appears to all coconut wood from different regions tested. Finally, is given some recommendations related to the utilization of coconut wood as an alternative construction material.
