Abstract

Trees are important part of street element as they create a vibrant urban area, protect pedestrian and other street user and improve the air and soil. However, many trees in main street of Manado are not treat well based on their character and therefore damage the structure of street. Moreover, in windy day, many trees branches are broken and endanger pedestrian and traffic. The maintenance for street trees are not done in a proper way. This paper identify existing street trees including local trees and their influence to the street in urban environment in Manado as one of the city in Indonesia. The identification is included the treatment for street trees and the type of street trees that the most suitable in urban area in Manado and tropical city in general. The methodology of this research is observation, interview and literature study to find a best type and treatment for street trees. This paper conclude that there is a need for a good management for the street trees, considering local trees and provide an urban street guideline to create a sustainable street where the trees, the street and the user are protected.
