Abstract

The use of coconut wood in building has been developed in recently yet in limited design and use. Most of the coconut wood have been used for the beginning step of building construction such as worker building and material for structure concrete mal. Considering the lack of wood available for building and the unique character of coconut wood in the development of building design, it is important to recognize alternatives design for coconut wood building. The methodology for this research are including preliminary study, field survey and modeling test design. Data collected from survey and observation are for the description for the list of design model coconut wood building using analysis and evaluation design approach in considering of architectural and wood construction design principle. The location of data collected is in Manado and its surrounding area by documentation and data listed of coconut wood building in small and medium scale. The result of this research is a listed of alternative design· model use in parts of building. The special aim of this research is to promote coconut wood as special local building material and as a symbol a North Sulawesi. This research conclude that there are a number of variety alternative design that can be choose and developed for parts of building in small size. The list of design model can be used for building in small and medium size and can be used for the future research with larger building.
